Those taking part in the discussion :
On Sunday, 22nd November 2009, at the 6.30pm service this whole topic was explored. The debate included the use of film clip interviews, Bible study from Hugh Palmer, Rector of All Souls and input/discussion from John Wyatt, Professor of Ethics and Perinatology and Dimity Grant-Frost, a nurse specialist in Palliative Care.
What's happening
Over the last year, the issue of assisted suicide, has been widely discussed in the media, in churches, and at dinner tables. The high profile case brought this year by Debbie Purdy (who wanted to ensure that her husband would not be prosecuted if he assisted her travel to the Swiss suicide clinic Dignitas) has caused further debate.
The heart of the issue
The issue has at its heart concepts of dignity, control, compassion, burden, suffering, hope and rights. Issues around old age, dying and death will affect every one of us and an understanding of the assisted suicide debate is key for Christians who would seek to respond compassionately and truthfully to those around them.
