Mark joined the All Souls staff team in late autumn 2005 as Senior Associate Minister. He was brought up in London (and subsequently lived in Malaysia and East Anglia) in a church-going home, but it was only when he was in his final year at school that he recognised the need for a personal decision to follow Christ. At university (where he studied Classics and Theology) he was then mentored by a good friend who was training for ordained ministry. Having perhaps originally thought that the world of the theatre and opera might open up a future career, the encouragement of friends and family led him to work in a couple of churches and to pursue ordination. Before completing a Masters at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, he did the Cornhill Training Course in London (where he gained a love for teaching the Bible and a wife - Rachel!). Both Mark and Rachel have been involved in university students’ ministry and this was a key factor in leading them to Mark’s appointment as curate and minister to students at Christ Church, Fulwood, in Sheffield. During this time, Mark was involved in 'Word Alive' and wrote his first book. In 2001, they relocated as Associate Mission Partners of Crosslinks to Uganda, where Mark was appointed to the faculty of Kampala Evangelical School of Theology (KEST), an interdenominational college. Kampala life was full of variety - including bringing up a young family (Joshua born in 1997 & Zanna in 2001) and by the end, Mark found himself taking on more of a leadership role - first as Academic Dean and then as Acting Principal.
As part of the All Souls staff team, alongside a busy Bible-teaching ministry, he has overall responsibility for Fellowship Groups, co-ordinating the Training programme and is involved in supporting families in the church. Mark brings a passion for developing links with the worldwide church, as well as a desire to share a culturally relevant witness to the Christian message in the heart of London. For 6 weeks a year he works with Langham Preaching (one of the 3 branches of Langham Partnership International) as co-ordinator of the programme in Europe. This involves spending time with leaders in a number of former communist (and other) countries, helping them to develop preaching movements in their countries as well as teaching on annual conferences and gatherings.
He is regularly engaged in writing and has published a number of books :
- Contributor to The Dorling Kindersley COMPLETE BIBLE HANDBOOK (DK, 2001)
- CROSS-EXAMINED - The Life Changing Power of the Death of Jesus (IVP)
- Good Book Guide to COLOSSIANS (GBC 2008)
- The NT & SLAVERY : Approaches and Implicatinos (Latimer Trust, 2007)
- An Historical Guide to ALL SOULS LANGHAM PLACE (All Souls, 2009)
He also keeps a blog (QUARENTIA) and is a regular contributor to various online journals and resources (including Damaris' CultureWatch website)
