Volunteer with ASLAN

We love to welcome new people to our team, no matter how much or how little experience you have.

Experience has shown us that the greatest social need for many homeless people is for genuine, loving friendships. Most of our areas of service serve a practical need whilst helping to also foster relationships between volunteers and those they serve. As relationships progress, we seek to tailor our services to meet the specific needs of each person we meet.

Volunteer Areas

We have different areas where volunteers can be involved in serving and helping the homeless people of Central London.

Morning tea run

Saturday, 4:15am - 8:30am

A small team of volunteers prepares sandwiches, tea and coffee, and an assortment of clothing and toiletries, which they then hand out at six locations on a route around Central London.

Sandwich Making

Friday, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Sandwich-makers are the backbone of the Saturday morning tea run, preparing the food and clothing that the tea run teams hand out.

Entertainment Evenings

Saturday, 5:30pm - 9:45pm

Every Saturday, we invite homeless guests to enjoy a meal followed by a time for games and conversation. Volunteers set out tables, prepare and serve food, and spend time getting to know our guests.

We also have three all-day coach or boat trips a year, and our hugely popular Christmas dinner at All Souls Church.

Day centre

Saturday, 8:30am - 12:45pm

Webber Street hosts approximately 90 guests who are served a hot breakfast, and also able to use the shower facilities, receive new clothes, and take part in ESOL lessons or a bible study group. Volunteers help with the practical running of the centre’s services in a number of roles, including spending time connecting with the guests.

Visiting

Monday, 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Visitors take a guest out for a meal every two weeks to provide friendship and emotional support.

As this work is both intense and challenging, we only accept volunteers with at least one year’s experience in ASLAN, or who have prior experience of mentoring or counselling, or working amongst homeless people.

Winter Shelter

Sunday Evening - Monday Morning, December - May

Westminster Night Shelter is a church-run initiative, providing emergency accommodation in the winter. ASLAN provides overnight shelter one night each week, manned by 10-20 volunteers, who serve either a night shift or morning shift once every four weeks.

Support our Homeless Ministry

Prayer and material support go a long way in supporting the service that ASLAN provides the homeless people we meet in Central London.
